6-storey Convention Center to rise

Posted by Explore Iloilo

ON OR before February, nearly 700 inmates will be transferred to the new Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) in Pototan. The vacant area will pave the way for a revenue-generating project on the same area within two years.

Iloilo Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. announced this project in his State of the Province Address (Sopa) just last week.

Tupas proposed the construction of a convention center and commercial and government office building in two year’s time.

“One of the handicaps of Iloilo in promoting itself as a convention center is the unavailability of a facility that could accommodate 3,000 delegates.

Tupas said this would enhance the competitiveness of Iloilo in its bid to become the next investment center in the country.

Mejorada said the center would be as big as the new Capitol building with commercial and government agencies as tenants.

The building’s design will blend with that of the new Provincial Capitol. It will cost more or less 500 million, said Mejorada. This amount is more than what was spent for the Capitol building which costs P380 million.
