Here’s a roundup of soon to open restaurants and coffeeshops this month. It seems the food scene in Iloilo is in the upswing. There have been an upsurge of new food shops in the city this year ranging from locally owned businesses to national and international franchises.
Afrique’s Smallville Branch
Afrique’s is a popular Italian restaurant in Iloilo because of their good food and affordable prices. They will be opening their new branch in Smallville (although, I still do not know where exactly) to add to their existing branches in Jaro (near Jaro Big Market), Molo (Hotel del Rio), and General Hughes St. (near Plaza Libertad).
Peppy Thai Jaro
Peppy Thai is popular for being an affordable carinderia style Thai restaurant located along Diversion Road. They will be moving to a new location infront of Jaro Big Market in El98 St.
Mang Inasal E. Lopez St., Jaro Branch
Mang Inasal, undoubtedly Iloilo’s most popular restaurant chain, will be opening a new store in near JD Jaro and McDo Jaro (also WVSU, INHS, Iloilo Mission Hospital, and WVSU-Medical Center).
Kopi Roti
Kopi Roti is a Singaporean coffee shop brand. Their name literally means coffee and bread in Bahasa. They will be opening a store in Smallville replacing what used to be Club Pure (in between Krua Thai and Red Steaks).
Dulcinea
Dulcinea is a mid-high range restaurant mostly known for their desserts but they also have serve meals and snacks. Dulcinea, a restaurant originally from Manila, will be branching out in SM City Iloilo (near the main entrance in what used to be Pancake House).
Cafe Laguna
Cebu-based coffee shop, Cafe Laguna will open their first store in Iloilo in SM City beside David’s Tea House.
Added: Blue Jay Deli
Blue Jay is a popular local coffee shop and deli in Iloilo. Their new store will be located in Amigo Mall. They currently have 2 branches in the city: one along General Luna St., and the other in Smallville.

@janine….although Cebu have some problems too over poverty it has thriving economy,,,,,,,,the sad part is, Negros Occidental have double problem , first it is not progressive , and at the same time with huge problem on economy,,,,, lets make a comparison… Oton and Murcia … Murcia… you very rarely see beautiful decent houses along the way in Murcia (of 30 KM long, there could be 5-10)while you see children to old aged people you can sense their grief pain and lost of hope etc misery of economic conditions burdened by cheap labors in farms…. while in Oton, from San Antonio to Trapiche ( approx 15 Km) … Innumerable beautiful houses,a great sign of prosperity, you’ll see happy faces from children to old aged, although not all are rich,while most live a lot better life than those in Murcia, they are quite in good living a comfortable life…so there’s a gross disparity , the extreme poverty ( Negros) its magnitude and impact to the lives is depressing….

you have Regional Hospital?—-you must be thankful if it will be upgraded into Medical Center…. the ratio of Hospital to population in Negros Occidental is high….meaning… you need to build more hospitals to cater your sick fellow Negrenses. However, you have state of the art health facility like Riverside Medical Center and also Kidney and Eye Center.. all I can say is you have very good politicians that access Central Office to build structures in there , that SM preferred to build convention center in bacolod city than iloilo although National government offices are here? Historically, Iloilo is often shunned upon by investors, they preferred Davao and Cebu…only recently some set their eyes on here … but Iloilo is often the least of choice…. i have no clue whats the reason why…. but its good thing…. money/economy wont be controlled/monopolized by them, that’s the bright side..

as for me… i have nothing to think about Negros Occidental, i do not compare Iloilo from Negros Occidental , we have soo many things to improve here… like unpaved roads, or dilapidated too, San Pedro , Sooc Navai swamps, roads that connects Nabitasan and Diversion Roads, Relocations for informal settlers etc , you are welcome to live and work here in Iloilo …

Negros Occidental is struggling how to improve the lives of its population, it seem it could not be solved in the next 10-20 years or more how to empower the community to prospered.. its very difficult… its very puzzling how to live or work happily in a place of uncertainty … A strong Political intervention through economic policies and long term plans to mitigate poverty must of priority in Negros Occidental.

If you are throwing shit at each others face, I personally do not find it professional. If you are out of the country foreigners will not ask you if you are an Ilonggo or Cebuano or Abu Sayyaf. They will ask you if you are a Filipino and they adore most of us. Kon may progress man ang both cities kon sin o man ang nauna buligan ta ang naulihi kay ang view sang iban lahi sa aton nga kon may problema kapwa ta Pilipino gabinuligay kita. Hi, I’m from Bacolod and currently working here in Cebu but mabalik nako Bacolod this August to work there. Pero sa Iloilo ko ginbata. I’m happy na makita man ang progress sang Iloilo. Last ko nabisita ang Iloilo last May paglubong ka tiyo ko. Before pirme gid kami gapa Iloilo kay taga dira iloy ko bakasyon2x. Kainchindi manko kinaray-a. Well, both cities have differences man gid. Bisan sa batasan kay makita kona sa amay kag iloy ko LOL. I am really hoping na mag work together kita tanan para sa ika-uswag ka region ta. Pirme nalang Cebu mabatian ko basta Visayas. I am also hoping that someday aside sa mga call centers, may ara man tani other IT related companies nga gafocus sa software solutions, Web design/development and SEO kag kung anu pa kay indi man tanan maubra call center kag mag tabok sa Cebu o magpa Manila para maka work kag magamit nila kung anu tinapusan nila. I know may mga companies man in both cities pero di pa amu na ka sikat pareho sa call centers. Tani, sa pag uswag ka mga syudad ta, indi ni tani maging rason na magamu ang syudad ta. Kay kung diin ang progress dira gadamu mga illegal settlers, kinawatay, hold up, pinatyanay kag kung anu pa na krimen. Gahigko, kay bisan sa diin lang mahaboy basura grabe ang pollution kay kadamu nagid salakyan. Tsakto2x lang ah.
Pero mas gusto ko man gyapon ang set up ka Bacolod kung anu siya subong. Bisan gamay nga developments may ara man ah…
To Iloilo, Bacolod masupport sinyo ah as regional center kamu. Bacolod and whole Negros mawork man para mapromote man ang Western Visayas. Kita lang ya ang duwa ka syudad kag nga magululutod by blood and history galing ginseparar lang gid bi ka dagat. san-o ayhan ma construct ang tay2x between Negros and Panay man? well, indi man ta mag away parte dira, both cities may mga advantages and disadvantages. im from guimaras, married and residing here now in bacolod, but of course my heart and mind still lies where i was born, siempre pa sa iloilo. as developments, ka damo gid man developments diri sa bacolod and i agree nga madamo na gid man bpo centers here in bacolod as i assess, much more compare to iloilo, that is because of political climate here in bacolod. but in contrary, im optimistic too with regards to my home province iloilo, damu naman didto business prospectives, and optimistic naman sa mga bago ninyo nga elected officials, all praise lang gali kay newly elected congressman ninyo and former mayor trenas, kay since i was small, gapangita gid ko developments dira sa iloilo daw wala gid ko may nakita, sa iya lang term ko nakita ang daku nga pagbag-o sang i.c. with two new flyover, with smallville complex, with several mid rises building, and plus that plazuela de iloilo and promising ayala technohub, megaworld…etc… thanks for all of that… hope mag operate na sooner ang coal fire power plant niyo… para wala na brownout, tayuyon na kuryente, kag wala na interuption ang office namon sa jaro…and lastly there are more than 15 manning agency in iloilo as brances out from manila… 1 ride na lang from bacolod sa fastcraft to my office in jaro…thanks gid.

May Kepco Company nga prenotest sa Antique,punta ng Iloilo prenotest ulit sa Iloilo pumunta ng Cebu at doon Itinayo, eh ngayon andoon nakatayo nagserbisyo at nagpaunlad na ngayon sa mga bayan ng Cebu maraming mga tao ang nakatrabaho at progressibo na sila.Nang itinayo sa Cebu bat hindi sila nagprotesta doon? Yes, thats really very very true, all the studies are all correct, one day all of us will be surprise. Iloilo will come back again as the next economic hub of the country. Time lang ang inaantay ng Iloilo talaga pero the truth na, eh surpass ng bacolod ang Iloilo thats really a big Joke talaga. Iloilo is one of the most Important port of the country after manila and cebu.And it is the only Western Visayas city having the real International Port and Busiest Domestic port. They are now also Inter-connecting all Panay provinces road widening all over panay for the opening of a very beautiful and large Iloilo International Airport as the Next International Gateway or Hub of the region or Philippines in the World. They have also the largest and more increasing numbers of malls outside manila and cebu with more than 150 banks in the city. And Expensive fastest growing real estates metropolitan in the country.They are also the Next BPO hub of the Philippines. They have now also a lot of Implementation for flood control and Power sources of multi-billions projects. For me, i think they are telling that bacolod is progressive i dont think so, thats what they think only or medyo exagerated nga lang. But for me i also agree sa reality ng studies nga ,huwag nating eh claim ang most livable ,friendly na mga record because all of the awards both cities pareho they received this awards.Pero sa Latest na mga records baka hindi tayo na update .kahit in the BPO association of the philippines. Iloilo is the center or the Next Hub because of their untapped young potential,talented professionals.They produced more graduate and very good graduates inthe country. For me in the long run for the future magiging edge ito lalo ng Iloilo in the whole country. Pero huwag nakayo magtalo kahit saan, pero malapit napala ang Dinagyang Festival sa Iloilo yan ang totoong the Best Festival of the Philippines. Balik kami diyan .Yan ata ang 3 times Best Tourism Awardee ng Tourism Association of the Philippines. Balik kami talaga sa January gusto ko panoorin talaga ang Dinagyang ng taga Iloilo.
Ako im not belonging to any of your cities of Iloilo and Bacolod, but im updated of the philippine economic trend, at present ang pananaw ko personal judgement ko, because both cities i had been there as often, kahit wala ang pa ang BPO companies declaration, hindi na surpass ng bacolod ang Iloilo, when it come to progress, Iloilo is doing well, mas malaki ang edge ng Iloilo lalo pa sa future ,ngayon ang Iloilo is the Center of big BPO companies in the whole Philippes as the next BPO Hub of the Philippines iwan ko kong san nyo kinukuha ang news nyo, pero ito ang reality time lang ang inantay ng Iloilo pero babangun ito uli as next economic center of the Philippines, at wise talaga ang Iloilo pero may planning na lahat doon sa mga development ,at pumasok na ang mga malalaking Investors even ayala,megaworld at etc. walang exageration diyan ang katotohanan lang kahit ako pagsinabi mo na progressive ang bacolod i dont beleived in that, 2nd edge ng Iloilo bacause they produce a large products of young professionals ,because of huge numbers of high Standards Colleges and Universties na yan ang hahaun sa future at foundation ng Iloilo sa hinaharap and bacolod wala niyan. They have top graduates of there metropolitan, they produce Intellectual people not only in the region but in the whole country as well. 3rd being the Center of Economic,Political,Commerce,Banking of the region ma maintain nya ang superiority of progress,even it is the only city of the province after passi,dumadami ang city lang sa negros dahilsa income ng mga town yan, pero maging intact parin ang at focus ang improvement sa Iloilo kasi Center sya geographically ng region at location.4th Iloilo is more progressive parin in the future dahil and not only in the region even compare to other cities of the philippines dahil 5-6 million or more people in 5 other provinces ang dependent sa Iloilo as center ng Kalakalan ng region even ang Negros. At maging centro din ito ng International fligths inthe future dahil it is now the fastest growing passengers demand of the Philippines as 4th bussiest airport of the country 1.1 million passengers as of 2008. Kailangan nga dugtungan na ng terminal 2 ang bago na airport sa ngayon palang eh, kasi sa studies Iloilo will have a double passengers in the mid 2010 and 2015 pagumumpisa na ang international routes na soon to start na with 3 countries na ang alam ko may 3 pa na interisado.At Infact mas di hamak na napakaganda kahit sa Pilpinas at malaki kahit terminal ng International airport ng Iloilo ,kahit sa budget ng Airport lang Iloilo 9b compare to 4b na airport ng silay. Add the fact that those who are near Cebu like San Carlos, Escalante, Calatrava prefer to conduct their businesses, do shopping in Cebu coz mas lapit and Cebuano speaking. What I’m trying to say was, it’s because of a good fiscal policy Bacolod why we attain this kind of development and it’s amazing why Iloilo didn’t suck up all the investments unlike what Cebu, CDO or Davao did in their respective regions. And FYI, there are a lot of cities here in Neg. Occ which don’t have sugar centrals i.e Himamaylan, Sipalay, Escalante, Talisay but they were able to meet the necessary requirements to be a city. C’mon guys this is not about which place if better or not, it’s about accepting the fact that there are other places that are doing well aside from Iloilo. Iloilo used to be the queen city of the south but what happened to it? Cebu outdid you guys, their economy is way well off, 10 times more progressive than Iloilo and Bacolod combined. For me, the progress of a place does not constitute on its size nor the number of inhabitants. A very classical example is Singapore. With 710.2 sq. km. and only close to 5 million people – such a small country indeed yet it is the 5th wealthiest nation in the world in terms of GDP. Progress means development of individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level. I would say, achieving this level might be far-reaching or impossible but it all depends on our concerted efforts not only from the government but from the entire filipino people as well. Comparing Iloilo City and Bacolod City
Bacolod City has the total land area of 161.45 km2 with total population of more than 500,000 while Iloilo City has the total land area of 70.3 km2 with 450,000 population.
Halin ako sa duwa kalugar nga ini and I observed the quality of lives sang 2 ka cities nga ini. Iloilo City has more middle class citizen compare than Bacolod City. Bacolod has more high class citizen and more low class citizen compare to Iloilo City.
Damo ka kita mangaranon sa Bacolod pero damo ka man makita pobre. Dako gid ang gap sang mga tawo sa Bacolod.
We can not say ang isa kalugar nga progressive kung aton paga-istoryahan ang infrastructure lang we have also to consider the quality of live sang mga tawo.

Iloilo Province don’t have alot of city because of the size or area of Municipalities here are small and consider also the population.
Iloilo has 42 municipalities and 1 component city with 4,829.1 km² area while Negros Occidental has 19 municipalities and 12 omponent cities 12 with 7,802.5 km² area.
Negros Occ. is close to 3 Million population while Iloilo is more than 2 million (or 2.2 Million) only.

Correction, Bacolod is a bit as progressive as Iloilo because it caters to Kabankalan, San Carlos, Cadiz and Silay. Wheras in Iloilo, you only have, Roxas and Passi. See? We had already our lessons from “Frank”, “Ondoy” and “Pepeng’s destructive wraths”. Devastations and loss of lives could have been avoided or mitigated had our government focused their efforts on maintaining our environment and calamity preparedness. It’s about time our local government in Iloilo should focus more on infrastructure projects such as road widening, improve drainage system, water system and power supply. Once all these problems are solved, i am certain that every good thing will follow and we could expect for an influx of investors to the city.

Since then and till now, iloilo is the Political, Educational, Financial and Commercial Center of the Region, We have more banks in iloilo compare to its neighbor. Iloilo has always the advantage of its Location, iloilo city not only serve the province of iloilo but to the entire panay island that includes antique, aklan, capiz and guimaras, (and to negros to some extent) this explains why iloilo economy is much dynamic compare to bacolod, i hope you got the logic. While its a fact that iloilo is behind in BPO industry, but i dont think it will take long, since a clean coal plant is on its way to finnish, development in the city is already spreading in its suburbs(pavia and sta.barbara), while bacolod is still concentrated on its urban area itself. So stop bragng that they had outdid iloilo.

I was just reading the thread and I can’t help but laugh at your bickering lol especially to Albert and Cyrooz. I am from Bacolod but I also love Iloilo coz I have so many friends there. We should stop putting down each cities but instead we should be proud that Western Visayas is the only region in the entire country to have two powerhouse economies i.e Cebu dominates Central Visayas, same thing that CDO with Region 10 or Davao with Region 11. But neither Bacolod nor Iloilo dominates Regions 6. So Iloilo and Bacolod should complement each other, since both cities have weaknesses and strengths. Just stop the crab mentality and be glad of the development that both cities have obtained. Atleast we’re able to attract businesses from Manila. It doesn’t matter who came ahead first. Ang Pinas was way ahead of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, etc sg una but what happened in the end? Ahay na ungusan ta so let’s hope our LGUs will not be that complacent and instead strive to further the developments of our cities. We shouldn’t wait for Tacloban and Dumaguete to outdo us. In my own opinion, Iloilo is the political, commercial and educational hub of the region while Bacolod is the industrial and financial hub.

FYI: In Bacolod, they also have Sta. Lucia (Manville Royalle), Vista Land (Camella Homes), FilEstate (La Herencia Negrense). Plus Ayala Land, Globe Asiatique and Active Group. There are local developers with 1st class subdivisions also like The Palisades, Palmas Del Mar and Pacific shores, Sta. Clara, CapitolVille, Villa Valderrama. etc. etc.
If its real estate they are ahead of us in that aspect also.

As what I have observed, people of bacolod tend to be more on the brand side rather than “value for your money” side. Here in Iloilo people don’t just buy things because of the brand. They buy things because they are satisfied with what they get for what they paid. People here are willing to pay even for expensive brands if it satisifes them. Pero kun sa pa status sym bol man lang, indi ta ya para dira. Ang taga bacolod, bisan mahal kag indi man worth sa ila gn bayad, pero kay status symbol, ma gasto gd sila. It’s a matter of culture. I’ve been to Batangas and I’ve noticed that even if you are a visitor, they would serve you simple foods. but their homes are beuatiful. You would wonder why they have beautiful homes pero ila pagkaon, simple lang. Daw indi mag coincide ang food kag house. What i’ve learned is that they invest more on the house, and not on food. Kita di ya bisan daw ma guba na ang balay, ga tulo and atop kay buslot na, pero mang gasto pa gyapon para lang da best ang i handa sa birthday or pyesta. The point is each area has its own culture on how people spend, earn money etc.
i agree. i was born, raised and educated in iloilo but worked in bacolod city… it’s a matter of way of living.
mind you, if you want to buy a second hand car…go to bacolod, bcoz its the best place to buy. people tend to buy a new one but cannot really last to pay it, then banks recover them (one reason why there’s a sudden influx of banks) while in iloilo, people dressed in puruntong will buy vehicles in cold cash. see the difference?

There’s a school, a gasoline station, a 3 existing Ayala Subd. and an Available area for Retail strip and IT Park. Have you seen that big space infront of Ayala? I’ve talked with ALI’s VISMIN Head Francis Monera and was surprised to know the reason why Iloilo wasn’t considered as a part of their development in the VISMIN region. One more thing, Cyrooooz, please explain why Bacolod has a bigger IRA allocation as a city compared to ours? and Worst, even in the province category; their Province is still miles away from us. These are just a few indicators that NOW they are really ahead of us. Why can’t we just accept this and learn from our mistakes? Blame our local government. Let’s be vigilant enough and i guess its really time to learn and embrace the truth. There is nothing to loose if we make some moves to regain our economy back and outprogress them again.
SM will be building the hotel their first. Why? They need it. Besides, SM will also be building a hotel here. SM Savemore? Do you realise how many Savemores, Iloilo already has?.Bacolod will have to get 2 more to compete with Iloilo. MO2 builds another hotel there because the owner is a Bacolodnon..if the owner were only pure Ilonggo, then Iloilo will have another hotel. The bottomline is, yes. Bacolod is improving. It is developing thats why some people say its ahead of Iloilo but the truth is, Bacolod needs to do so much more to be able to compete with Iloilo.
They are doing very well on the BPO sector. Other than that, Iloilo is either ahead or in the same level as Bacolod. Its all sugarcoating.
Sigh. I’ve read in the papers today, SM is building their First Hotel in Bacolod at the back of SM City by end of 2009. And one more thing SM Save More is on the stage of construction along Bacolod Libertad; there are 2 Westown hotels in their city. There must be something. I believe that they are ahead of us already. They have bigger IRA allocation as a city and their Province has also bigger IRA compared to us. If we take smallville out of Iloilo, we are obviously behind by our neighbor city. Question: What do we have here in Iloilo, Bacolod doesn’t have except for a number of schools and universities located in our city?
Guys, we have to accept the fact that Bacolod is indeed doing very well. They have big BPO’s in their city and really changed the landscape of Bacolod. Teletech and Teleperformance in Bacolod are both huge compared to us here in Iloilo; adding their Convergy’s and Transcom. We are so behind them. Ayala North Point, Plantazionne Verdana Homes and Asyana, all Ayala development contributes to their development even more. The city is so clean, buildings are new, wide roads; looks very progressive and take note they even have Starbucks, Gloria Jeans and Mc Cafe. La Salle is so beautiful. We really need to be alarmed by this, even their banking industry is growing so fast, new banks and branches sprouting every corner. Citibank is there and take note they even have more BDO branches already compared to us. Neverthless, it’s never too late for us. The local government needs to do something!!!!!! Tayo ang simula. Let’s make change NOW.
so far iloilo is the place of high standard school…ive been there for almost a year and i really like them for being so malambing….i guess this place is the 1 in comes to literacy rate..bilib gd mn ko sa mga taga iloilo..mga alamon..thats in their dialect..so far i learned everything in iloilo…
this city has a lot of SM braches all over the region..
So Far ok man mga ilonggo..specially iloilo..they are highly competent when it comes to educational standards…iloilo i think is place of intelligent…thats what i have observed..so far i’ve been in iloilo for a year..and they r so malambing..i really like the place damo malls…

HI. I think we ilonggos really go for what we call “value for our moneyâ€. We are not that “bagitâ€. Those who can afford are willing to pay a much more expensive brand as long as it satisfies their expectations. When Kenny Rogers opened in Iloilo City, who would have thought it would last long in the business? Considering that its a foreign owned company. And it has a higher price compared to other restaurants. But look at the store especially during lunch and dinner time, you have to wait in line for quite a while. Sbarro, ma pila ka man at some times. True that in Iloilo, you can have expensive restaurants as long as you satisfy the customers expectations. I also ate at bigby’s several times. I think its one example of a store that cannot satisfy the customer’s expextation. Expensive, big servings but the taste is just the ordinary thing. I can cook my own at home and it would taste better than Bigby’s. Indi lang pag intu-a and ilonggo kay madulaan ka gd negosyo.
Electricity in iloilo is way too high and brownouts are a common thing. bad for businesses.
Ilonggos are also clanish. They patronize their own. restaurants from outside of iloilo who opened here are now closed.aristocrat,sunburst,bigbys to name a few.

The full store of Figaro Bacolod is already closed and from what I’ve heard , they won’t open again. While the small Figaro Iloilo is doing okay.
With the countless times I’ve been to SB Bacolod, I think Rustan Coffee Corporation might’ve over expected the bacolod market. I mean the place is so big while the customers are so few. The al fresco area rarely gets used except for the smokers.
Maybe you should visit Starbucks Bacolod more often, Cyrooooz. The place is spacious and customers DO fill up the place, both the airconditioned areas and the outside part. I know this because I am there almost everyday; although there are certain times in the day that it’s almost empty (shortly after opening, and just before dinner time), this is quite a normal phenomenon that also happens in Starbucks stores in Manila. We should hand it to SB Bacolod for being brave enough to venture there, and IMHO I think they’re doing pretty well.

-Gloria Jeans bacolod has been open for years now. I think they only have that because of the Pagcor hotel. Almost every Pagcor hotel and casino has a Gloria Jeans Coffee shop.

Starbucks isn’t a franchise. The franchise is solely owned by Rustan Coffee Corporation. If franchise were available, dugay na nagka Starbucks ang Iloilo.
Bacolod will surely be first considering that Butch Lopez( i think) hails from bacolod or has a family there.
But don’t despair, it might take a while, but its impossible that Starbucks won’t open here. It may take months or years but i am sure Ilonggo consumers are very hard to resist.

the question is not why they are opening in bacolod first because it is not the call of these stores to open anywhere first or last. it just so happens there is an investor willing to invest in bacolod already. these are franchises. bacolod people are more risk-willing when it comes to investing while ilonggos are risk-averse. it may take a while before someone is willing to invest the needed capital for those coffeeshops here i iloilo because our businessmen are risk-averse.
I agree with Donnie. Although both cities have the same purchasing power, consumer and business behavior/habits of both cities are very different.
oh I forgot, Blue Jay will also be opening a new branch in Amigo Mall. More restos and coffee shops to open in Amigo’s Tribeca. It is currently underconstruction.

last I heard, they are postponing opening a branch in Iloilo because they wanted to prioritize their newly opened branch in Boracay. I have no definite news from them about their latest plan in Iloilo.
