A Grand Old House in Iloilo
What is so fascinating about an old house? Its architecture, its history? The story of the people who once lived in it? In the old district of Jaro in Iloilo stands a 200-year-old house where the wife of former vice-president Fernando Lopez Sr., Maria “Mariquit” Javellana-Lopez, once lived. The house was built by her banker grandfather Ramon Javellana, and it served both as a residence as well as a bank. Robert Lopez Puckett, a great-great-grandson who is now the owner of the house, removed a plank of the molave floor in the master bedroom and showed us where the bank’s money used to be kept. In 1910, a vault was installed there and it still exists today.
Puckett started the restoration of his ancestral house in 1993. The wall finish on the ground floor was carefully chipped off to reveal the original red bricks underneath.

Since my first visit to Iloilo I have wished that the people in the Philippines would wake-up to the wealth of history they have… here in america a historically rich site like this would be covered in tourist awaiting a guided tour so they could learn things like the banks money was once under the bedroom floorboard. Here people pay good money for such things. There is also the World War Two history of the Philippines which could if handled correctly draw tourist from all over the world. I live in Louisville, Kentucky home to the famous baseball bat manufacturing company. You wouldn’t believe how far people will travel to watch a chunk of wood be made into a bat. We also have the “Kentucky Derby” a horse race that even the Queen of England and other world leaders have come to see.
