Calle Real
Calle Real is the old name of the Iznart and J.M. Basa Streets, which is lined by businesses owned mostly by Filipino-Chinese traders. The street boasts of buildings that date back during the Spanish and American colonial periods.
Calle Real was also known as the Escolta of Iloilo. It was the site of most of the city’s European, Chinese and American retail stores, with property values markedly high along it.
It is a shopping and business district of the city. Here you can find a wide array of products distinct from what you find in malls which are a lot cheaper and more reflective of Ilonggo culture.Calle Real is located in the heart of the city’s business district, you certainly won’t miss it. A little reminder though, the younger generations are not that familiar with the street’s old name, so just use J.M. Basa or Iznart Sts. instead.

replyI just wanted to let the publisher to know how thankful I am that you posted a picture of JM BASA st. I am the grandson of the owner of the old YENS BAKE SHOP. i don’t know if you remember that. it was located directly to the left of OTANI and accross the street of the old mansion house.
that picture brought a lot of memory back and it felt good.
