The Jaro Cathedral has become one of Iloilo’s most famous and treasured landmarks, and for more than a hundred years has accommodated the spiritual needs of Ilonggos. The harsh reality is, it is in dire need of a general repair and the Parish of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria is appealing to all to help in the renovation of this cathedral, especially the half-century old roof.

Behind those crumpled ceiling is something alarming. Some G.I. sheets are sagging because the wood (purlins) to which they are attached are rotten. The electrical system needs to be updated to conform with safety standards. Other structural elements also need to be changed, including the dome

Right before us is the reality that our cathedral church building needs immediate repair. The estimated cost is amounting to 20 million pesos. This will cover the repair of the roof, its structural support, the repair of the ceiling, the repair of the dome, and a more systematic electrical rewiring. This also includes the cost of securing perishable items such as statues and chandeliers (items of real value) among others as well as repainting and other interventions. The amount is definitely huge but when each of us will contribute our share — the little that we have can become the seed of a miracle.
