Well, it seems the gov't is hell bent on building those flyovers. Yesterday, I spotted the heavy equipment and trucks needed for the Gen. Luna-Diversion flyover project. I guess they are about to start the project anytime soon. Oh, well..I just hope they put some mitigating measures... possibly paint the structure or fence the area under the flyer over and put in some landscaping...and dont forget the street lights to deter criminals from hanging around this area (like in manila) especially since a lot of holdups have occured in this area victimizing students, employees and just about every law-abiding citizen in the city. A police outpost would be ideal (without the kotong cops).

As for the MRT or LRT, it may not be viable for the next 5 or so years (given the cost of construction and how to recover it since the routes are still short haul and jeepneys can offer cheaper rates). I know this may sound like a dream but wouldn't it be better to have a subway instead (i know, the cost is so huge and with just a 500-600K population for iloilo the chances of it being bankrolled is nil)? A mass transport system using clean, comfortable buses plying the major districts of the city may sound viable, although the politicians would be certainly scared of losing the jeepney, tricycle and trisikad drivers' votes if ever they push something like that.

There's just too many vehicles...
Maybe we should put the limit in the number of jeepneys and hopefully, we could find a better way of transport other than the jeepney.
Jeepneys have drastically placed the Philippines in the top 10 countries who destroy the athmosphere...
Instead of building flyovers, maybe we should've tried MRT or LRT...it's faster and more comfortable...
Or we should have limited the jeepneys in a ratio of 1 jeepney per 30 persons in the city...making the total number of jeepneys into approximately 15000...
Iloilo may seem more modern with its infrastructure but it will definitely turn into another Manila someday

A lot of studies from many countries, including ours, have shown the negative effects of these structures on the businesses, properties as well as the quality of life within immediate the vicinity.

Closer to home, the ill effects are evident in Metro Manila. Aside from the eyesore it has become & the generated pollution (noise, air and etc.), the flyovers in corner Ortigas Ave.-EDSA has affected businesses in this once prime real estate location. At least Robinsons galleria has multiple entrances owing to its lengthy frontage so the mall was able to mitigate the effects.

In downtown manila, U-belt area...the areas under the flyovers have turned into a well chaotic area with all the vendors, spill over of pedestrians, etc. In cebu, the flyover in corner hi-way mandaue-ac cortes sts. has made the area unattractive to business with all the noise, pollution, etc. Many businesses have relocated elsewhere as shown by the numerous office space for rent signages.

I just hope we learn the lessons from these 2 cities regarding flyovers, especially since the locations of both structures are so near our top schools (UP and USA).

I agree. I've read in the forums, that the businesses immediately beside flyovers tend to be affected negatively...

I wish there were other ways to decongest traffic in Iloilo without having to resort to flyovers. Flyovers have negative effects to the properties (quality wise) near it.
