Jon,
medyo ma-OT ta ani pero to respond to your post…I believe it is kurakot and will always be kurakot unless we the ordinary citizens do something about it. We can scream, kick and rant about it but unless we do something about it, one little move (if everybody does it), can do many things.
nobody would dare to touch public funds unless the public demands and participates in what gove’t does in its daily activities.
If you get lousy service from a public servant, write a letter to the newspapers…go to bombo, see the supervisor, or the director of the agency. If you have to file a complaint, file it. If everyone would follow those simple steps, every government official or worker would be on their toes.
It’s partly our fault. we allowed it to happen. we didn’t protest, we didnt scream, we didn’t file the necessary cases, we did’nt go to the streets, we didn’t demand proper service.
What we get is a result of our own apathy. People will continue to steal, people will continue to lie. Government officials will still think that by delivering a service, project is a favor…an utang na loob that we have to vote them.
Do you think it’s earth shaking that your secretary submits the proper report? Or is it a big deal when your account gives you the accurate financial figures? Or when the janitor cleans your CR and wipes your floor clean does it mean you owe him your undying attitude, when you are paying him fairly for a job you both agreed on at the start?
When you vote/chose someone to perform a job, shouldn’t gratitude be the other way around? These gov’t officials should be grateful to us instead of the other way around. It is weird…so ridicoulous actually, these guys post billboards to remind us that they are doing their jobs like your maid posting notes telling you…uy sir…u should be grateful I am sweeping your floor. They post billboard to tell us how much was spend as if it was their own money. They tell us it is THEIR project when they were elected in the first place to come up with that project.
If government were a publicly listed corporation, the CEO would have been thrown in jail for a long time, the board of directors banished for life by the stockholders.
If I ran my company the way government runs itslef, the company’s stockholders would have hung my balls up the lampost a long time ago.
But don’t lose hope…it will get better..if we do something about it.
peace
replyNo black magic can stop a devious acts–but GOD will in His time not ours—-but as residents of the whole Iloilo island the only thing we people can do is CHANGE among ourselves– cause in the long run who will stand strong are those who are HONEST—-politics are dirty anywhere you go–they have the same game but of different players–i would say that no matter how they hoard things and make a huge bank accounts/deposits they cannot bring those stuffs in U_HAUL at their gravesite or cure their long- term illness–they will still have consequences of their actions-just let them enjoy their ill -gotten temporary wealth and later see the outcomes…but for us we can stand strong for sure despite all the evil things we see around us– we are the HOPE of the land and GOD will take care of us…peace!!
replyits true we dont need to compete w/ other city, iloilo is on top in terms of corruption. politicians shud focus well on how to legally stole money from the govt.
replyi really dont know what to do even the ABB had its own problem, probably we kud turn to cursing and blak magic- basi makilatan pa man cla.
Jon,
Of course, you’re right corruption is a bane whereever we go. It robs us, here in the present, of our taxes and hope, robs our elders of their past and robs our children of their future and idealism.
Question is…what are we going to do about it?
replyAllana, I agree with you especially on the COMPETE thing. Ask any sensible businessman, worker, government worker/official in Cebu, Davao, Makati, Naga or Quezon Cities…are they working hard to compete? Answer is no. They work hard because they know that they are actually challenging themselves.
As I have mentioned in my previous posts, trying to compete is not only not only realistic, but the wrong strategy. Forget cebu, forget manila, forget davao or hong kong or any other city.
A city exists for its people. Let Iloilo bloom and boom through its own pace, its own time and find its own unique niche. Whether as an educational center, cultural center…etc., my point is basically comparing/competing with other cities just wouldnt hack it.
Takie the case of cebu (para di off topic), ask the man on the street in cebu if he is thinking of supplanting Manila, HK or Sing? Ask the captians of industry there if they are thinking of getting one over another city…one would just get a look of disbelief (if your lucky) or just a plain “duh” look. People there are so busy making a living, doing business, serving customers to engage in petty and childish things to engage in questions like who is better this city or that. The only competition people know there is actually themselves. How to make life much better. how to make better products, services, etc. Thats the main thing.
That is the attitude we should take. We work, we build things and most importantly relationships.
Compete? Nami sa ego, nami na sound byte sa press or TV but for people who work hard for Iloilo, we could only just shake our heads in disbelief.
By the way, a bit of correction. Cebu doesnt have much material resources to speak of. What resources? They cant even grow their own food and have to buy it from Iloilo and Mindanao. Soil conditions and topography isnt suitable for feeding a population of almost 3M people. As what a cebuano friend told me once: there are 4 options cebuanos: 1.) Go into business 2.) Be a skilled professional 3.) Move out of Cebu, last…4.) Strave to Death. No farm to fallback to, no fertile soil. just 4 alternatives.
As for the shipyard, it wasnt as if the shipyard landed on them. Cebu was destinied to be a shipping capital given its natural geographic location. It’s a natural hub. You can practically ship everything overnite from cebu within 24-hours to 14 cities in the VisMin area.
If you try that from Iloilo…it takes usually 24-72 hours.
In conclusion, no point in competing with cebu since Iloilo has its own place, must have its own pace since it has its own way of showing to the world what great stuff it is made of
peace!
replyits sad 2 say maskin gobyerno, terrorista, ideologist, marxist etc., pro man kurakot. take 4 eg sng cpp/npa they trying 2 say 2 d poor farmers that if they throw the govt and change it to communist all will b equal- equal tana nga pumoloyo sa kaimol kag cla nga official ang paayaw sa babaw. also in the autonomous region in mindanao ti ano na, waay man nag asenso opisyal man gyapon ang damo kwarta. these people should first take action by eliminating corrupt govt offical as sample to make the people believe in their cause.
replyWhy all the time we Filipinos in general use the term..compete?? It’s always a common everyday kind of thing - but we should try to avoid the use of word COMPETE,cause every city has its own people, its own productivity, own accountability-but looking at ILOILO as an island since i was born and migrated here in the United States we have farming as the source of our income just that kind of simple life hoping for the best to come..We as ilonggos should be proud of what our land can produce and keep it green…..!
Cebu has been a progressive city- the fact that they have lots of resources and income generating ports that cater to international shipping and cargoes and some are manufacturing companies and tourism as well…if only ILOILO will build a shipyard and an international seaport then we can say we will be next to CEBU or DAVAO cause we have the best maritime schools, best nursing and medical programs that works and we send them overseas to meet the need and it benefits us all and the country as well..
..but the only thing certain now is the crooked people leading the country all for GREED..thats what they all think about- building an empire for their own greediness, injustices and their spending–but all these GOD has a record…all of them will be facing GOD when their time comes.. ….sad part is ERAP pardon(meaning all the BIG time crooks are allowed and pardoned??but how about these people who are n jail for soooo many years and never been pardoned??only in the Philippines?? and the word” connections” to the same feather??))its very clear though that they come here in the US with bodyguards, theyre scared of what theyre doing..why i said that ?? i saw one in Vegas during PACQUAIO fight..i felt sad knowing that until now they’re already been soo old looking doing the same crap and never learned and still boasting with life… i dont envy people like that…sad sad they thought they own the whole world but loses their own soul!! where is church to them??they probably thought going to church is enough on sundays then monday back to their evil ways again??? it’s just not right at all—- we ilonggos should stand together in U N I T Y…for PEACE to our land– and compete in making a difference for e x c e l l e n c e!! God’s blessings be upon u all…..
replywe don’t have to run for public office to hang these crooks dry. We can do it as private citizens. although, sounds easier said than done, it is very much possible. Kinanglan may masample o matestingan lang isa ka corrupt in a dramatic way… we can send the fear of allah to all other crooks.
Bad new is… with Erap’s presidential pardon, te…dula man gana sang mga tawo manlagas sang corrupt kay ipardon man gale sa ulihi.
replyand we can be world-class citizens by being vigilant on the way things are being run, voicing it out concerns openly.
replyWell, as they say…the more progressive the place..more fingers dipping into the growing pie.
Actually, residents of Iloilo should make it known to the government that not only is our city/province a producer of world-class artists, professionals, businessmen, sport speople, etc….we are world-class citizens.
