SM, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, may possibly add another store in Iloilo City. Well, it’s not exactly new but SM Prime Holdings is currently bent on re-branding its Makro stores into SM Hypmermarket outlets because they feel that wholesale buying is not yet appealing to consumers in this time of economic slump. Initially, they will be converting three Makro stores in Novaliches, Makati and Mandaluyong into hypermarkets and see how it works out.
Jaro District hosts a Makro store, which could potentially be converted into an SM Hypermarket in the future. An SM Hypermarket is a hybrid of an SM Supermarket and Department Store all under one roof.
Currently there are four SMs in Iloilo: SM City (an SM Supermall in Diversion Road), SM Delgado (an SM Department Store and Supermarket with a number of leasable spaces in City Proper), SM Jaro (a standalone SM Supermarket near Jaro Plaza), and SM Quintin Salas (an SM Savemore in Jaro town Square).
with the coming of Robinson’s and Gaisano in Iloilo, SM is alerted and will always be competitive and now Gaisano has the biggest mall in Lapaz where the frontage just across the street is now slowly emptying of structures. I suspect the next SM Iloilo Supermall will be just on this site.

FYI to all of you guys. SM is already one of the stockholders of Pilipinas Makro, Inc. commonly known as Makro. They closed Makro Iloilo and converted to Hypermarket because they thought that SM Hypermarket will be a CLICK to the Ilonggos and wanted to double the daily sales of makro iloilo. But I’m really sure they’re wrong and failed their projections.
And added to that, how it will click to the ilonggos because it it situated in an area surrounded already with existing SMs?

Makro Iloilo has been closed as of May 29, 2010 for renovation and conversion.

1 consideration in putting up a business is a strategic location. maybe Iloilo is one of the best, that’s why SM would like to put up more establishments here..

A very risky undertaking during tough economic climate! We’re at the peak of the economic crisis right now, so, the only place one can go is rock buttom! Ouch!
there’s always a risk in putting up a business. And yes everytime is tough times in the Philippines but I don’t think it can go down to rock bottom. It’s way too negativistic. Besides, the Philippines remains on its positive growth compare to negative growth of western countries. Iloilo’s economy is not only fueled by locals but by massive base remiitances from OFWs across the globe, etc. – which I believe made Iloilo distinct and ahead with other provinces when it comes to purchasing power stability.
