Iloilo City (29 March) — Various types of buildings and infrastructure projects are unceasing and are being built which is an indication that Iloilo City is growing and becoming a progressive business center in the country, Mayor Jerry Trenas who is also the President of the League of City Mayors of the Philippines told some 700 budget officials from different parts of the country who gathered during the Philippine Association for Government Budget Administration (PAGBA) Seminar-Workshop held here in the city.
Mayor Trenas said that with the support of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo these infrastructure projects are unceasing and soon “we will be having two new vehicular fly overs to start construction in April and to be finished before the year ends”.
He told the participants to the PAGBA gathering that he was “happy to have chosen Iloilo City as the venue of the activity considering that we are trying to position Iloilo City as the convention center in this part of the country”.
On PAGBA’s theme, “Innovate or Stagnate: Period of Adjustments in 2007,” Mayor Trenas said that as we live here in the world of constant change, we have always to be prepared to make the necessary modifications.
The keynote speaker of the PAGBA gathering was Secretary Cerge Remonde of the Presidential Management Staff who said that the government is pursuing programs and projects that will not only prime up the economy but make social payback immediate and substantial. (PIA)
I hope Iloilo keeps Jerry Trenas as Mayor. I may not agree with him all the time but his vision to put Iloilo in the development road map should be supported.
I do have serious reservations with the flyover projects. Fly overs have negative effects on surrounding properties and that would depress or contribute greatly to the deterioration of an area. There has to be a better way to keep traffic sane without resorting to flyovers.
Let’s not delude ourselves to thinking that flyovers, tall buildings or high rises, western or uso/hip outlets/businesses are a sign of progress.
The real measure of a good city is whether the citizens of that city are proud and would want to stay in their city because of the quality of life the city has facilitated (education, health care, crime, etc.).
I agree Wolf. Why can’t they concentrate on the project highway first. We need a better and safety road to travel in different places like the cities and the provinces of Panay, instead of flyovers. I mean I supported the project proposals of the City Mayor, Jerry Trenas, but what I mean the projects that contibute more to the public, are the most important things to be accomplished. Cheers! :)
It is very interesting to know the happenings in the city of Iloilo with all the the developments,infrastructure etc. but i wish the developers,builders and the somebody who’s into this should have at least thought of the futuristic world.We already had gone to the “anthill Theory”.Somebody’s message here denotes them very clearly.If the streets,roads, bridges or even highways are pretty much organized it will be more pleasant,healthy and such a nice place to be.We hate to see structures that are not carefully planned and disorganized growing everywhere.Why can’t our politicians ever thought about building the bridge from iloilo to guimaras.
I think everything behind there is big(whatever screw the hell there is) rather than building an overpass or a flyover.
I think this is just one of the consequences of a central government, wherein projects don’t really match what a province or city really needs.
These kind of flyovers are going to be built all over the country. Iloilo is one of the cities chosen to be a proponent of this nationally driven project.
While I too would think of better ways to spend the money, alang-alangan i-refuse ta pa ni kay sa aton na ini patindog.
Also, I thought that the flyover would have a more complicated design with its on-ramps. Simple spaghetti flyover lang gali :)
I agree, there shouldn’t be any flyovers. What’s needed are intelligent traffic lights, enabling smart changing of lights depending on the vehicles present in all directions. Second, there should be proper signages such as where to turn, where to stop/not stop, park, speed, etc. Third, the lanes have to be properly marked such as left turn or go straight. Consider also putting up mass transit such as mini-buses or electric trolley instead of unregulated jeepneys. In the downtown area, walking is a good alternative as long as there is less pollution. One other thing, I’d like to see those ugly telephone poles relocated from major thoroughfares especially Dinagyang routes and photo spots such as Calle Real.
Debating about the flyovers and overpass is just a major waste of time. It just favors those that are greedy and corrupt non smart phil. gov. officials(which is about 99.9% of them)that thinks they have this very “lucrative”carreer in the Philippines=be a politician and screw the country,be a piso millionaire$$$ easy money babie$$$ and those that just need to live in it even though these are so wrong but nobody can’t correct this no more except ourselves and also knowing that it is already embedded deep in our culture and heritage.Anyway we as spectators only will just see how good or bad the people in position can do something specially in iloilo.I guess we will just see thier statues grew everywhere after they got the money.
There is one topic that i read in one of the magazines that’s very interesting and could fuel the country to succeed and payoff its world debt.It’s called the “deuterium fuel” i think this is worth debating and who knows somebody is interested to help the whole world coz it is an earth friendly fuel.If anybody wants to read more of it just type deuterium philippines and it tells you everything if what are these people are debating about.
I am so sorry edmac to tell you that if iloilo fix those phone poles,wires or even those traffic bulb lights they will not even last overnight piglick clean.Somebody is gonna have a 3 way flickering christmas light.
Interesting enough to know how plans are and how do they make it happen in due time..You’re right JP..cheers!!such projects needs a lot of money from foreign investors as the provider not really from the government and the cuts they get out of that is incredibly BIG..like here n US most of our tax money goes to roads maintenance ,health and other services but then we can see how it works for people to enjoy….but then in contrast to ILOILO there are more to get FIX first before major projects…like phone lines,street lights,pedestrians,traffic signs,littering,water system,traffic lanes,crimes and many more…but then again flyovers wont help solve d traffic problem at all… road widening and lanes..private vehicles separate lanes from public vehicles..speed limit signs..traffic lights

I don’t know if there’s a way that the debates and the illonggo forum would even get to the ones concern, maybe we could ask mr “explore iloilo moderator” if how these concerns be heard by the politicians or somebody holding the ball that have these projects be taken care of.I don’t know either if forums over mr politician and mr project will do any good, but like what i say in the previous that we will just take a look at them statues and horse crap looking structures that’s built to what’s left from the “inutang” freebiz.(As we all knew= Tayo ay hindi matatag balot sa utang).Basi palang pwede e cash option nalang sang illongo ang ila nga parte and then save it for the development of iloilo in a different way.I understand the world is full of corrupt human being,thieves, hustlers, cheaters=makawat but there will always be someone that’s considerably be straight and honest being …specialy from Iloilo.And maybe we need to try finding this leader to lead our country one from Panay island or Iloilo.As far as i know there are a lot o higly educated military man and a lawyer at the same time that is in iloilo.So if we have a better leader things could turn alot better but if we keep on letting those scrony ones in position we are all gonna be sorry ’till mother nature don’t want us no more.
I was very surprised when i saw iloilo the last time in July that it had changed big.Some of the places that i hanged around with were not there anymore but somekind of a loomy ground floor of a building that sprouted to all directions and it is a little bit warmer and pretty humid.So i could imagine if we have unplanned flyovers and overpasses that will exist pretty soon.It could be worse than the ones we already have in Manila and it will be the best place for thieves,pickpocketers and other crimes and all sorts of problems for the society.
