After years of construction, the 4.75km Jaro Floodway has finally served its purpose of minimizing the flooding problem of Iloilo City. As seen from the photos during our “inspection” of the actual site, we can see how effective the Jaro Floodway has been to divert flood waters from the Jaro River during the rainy season in Iloilo City. The flooding problem in Jaro and La Paz districts of Iloilo City and Pavia town used to be a major perennial problem among residents and business owners but now, residents have noticed a significant decrease of flooding incidents in the area. The uplifting development is seen to open vast, once flood prone areas in Jaro District and Pavia to additional developments especially with the construction of the Metro Iloilo Circumferential Road, a section of which will pass beside the Jaro Floodway.

The Jaro Floodway works by diverting flood waters from where the Tigum and Aganan Rivers meet before they get discharged into the narrow Jaro River. The Jaro Floodway provides a direct channel for flood waters to be discharged directly to the Iloilo Strait. It is important to note that the Jaro Floodway is not intended to totally eliminate the flooding problem of Iloilo City, especially in the City Proper area, since there are still other factors that contribute to the problem such as the city’s poor drainage system and low (below sea level) elevation. The Jaro Floodway is one of the components of the Iloilo Flood Control Project.

Nice job marc, now it’s nice to see something actually works.
mona ya iloilo baskog.
Now, that’s good news! This post came on time as I was wondering how are those floodways measures up to the latest downpours. Thanks Marcos for this update.
Good report…uswag Iloilo!
mo na ya.. Iloilo …. may solution sa ano man nga problema…
@ryan.. yes… baha is still the major problem everywhere in Iloilo…Alta Tiera… a little of rain … you’ll expect Noah’s Flood … Tanza Area… Robinson Area.. Jaro Plaza… here there and everywhere…
this is fantastic news!
Even better now that the government is in the process of repairing a wide stretch of road in Lapuz and Lapaz as well as a small portion in Jaro.
@randomguy,,, Iloilo City have still worst roads , Cuartero Area is still bumpy and with biggest cracks that is very messy in small rains , Jalandoni Street Iloilo City is rocky road , Tanza Area unpaved , Baldoza Lapaz worst , in Front of Lapaz Church like a graveyard up to CitiBuilders, Mandurriao Church with cracks, pits ,swollen or fractured too , Jalandoni Jaro front of SM is bulky and hell , up to Del Carmen and San Jose Road like chocolate cubes , DB Ledesma leads to pulverized roads , and Magsaysay to Wesbridge , road to Lapuz is accursed with bumps and deep holes , Rizal Street in Lapaz is mini-hilly mound of dust , decaying asphalt and pulverized concrete , road to CPU in Cuartero is like old Graveyard road,
Addendum—- Cubay Area is roughly 1000 meters apocalyptic post-earthquake road-ruins leading up to lowest part of hell-bitoon area with swampy muddy roads and sinkholes
Sana maimprove din ang mga floodways sa Manila para di na maulit ang nangyari nung sa bagyong Ondoy. Nice pics by the way.
Today i seen rushing big volume of water in Buhang Brigde , and theres no flooding anymore in Lopez Jaena Street…
leaders before, today and to come is the same….to gain for personal advantage…nothing have change… no matter how… people end up to be caught up . and they cant help it…
the jaro floodway really did help prevent floods… but come to look at it, is it really finished? I don’t think it is. Kung magsigi-sigi ulan kag kusog ang current, kaunon gid na sng tubig ang mga wala natapos simento nga kilid sng floodway. From which I’m sure will cause so many problems later on…
