The Neo-classical styled Leon Church stands in front of a beautiful and well-maintained plaza. It was planned to be one of Iloilo’s biggest and grandest church but for some reason it was left unfinished.
Even in its ruinous and unfinished state, the church is a compelling structure. Closer to the Renaissance idiom, the facade is divided into five bays by pillars. Planned as a large triple-nave church, the portals to the nave are planned as tall and graceful arches.

Inspection of the present building reveals that that the original length of the building was shortened, evidenced by ruins of the original structure found at the behind the present altar. Also, the belfries needs proper rehabilitation because the currently installed belfries look too crude and are ruining an other-wise beautiful facade.

The gates of Leon Church is marked by a vertical interpretation of the last supper and other biblical portraits.

This is the church of the hometown of my father, Leon town. I haven’t visited this religious structure yet. The last time I visited Leon was in 2003 but it was just a short visit. I was in Boracay Island with fellow reporters when I decided to leave the place and go to Iloilo and visit my relatives in Leon. I arrived in the afternoon of Saturday and left the mountainous town early Sunday morning to be able to catch my flight going to Manila after lunch.
You know what, I almost failed to catch the flight, even my fellow reporters who were still coming from Boracay almost failed to do so.
By the way I was quite disappointed during my first visit in Boracay Island upon seeing algae or “lumot” while swimming in the beach. So I decided to leave the island and go to Iloilo. I had more than two-hour drive aboard a van.
Having no time, I wasn’t able to go to beautiful places in Leon such as Bucari Mountain, dubbed as the summer capital of Iloilo for having a cool climate. I also failed to visit Leon Church and see how beautiful it was.
I hope the municipal government and the provincial government would conduct rehabilitation of the Church. The parish can ask for donations and seek financial assistance from concerned government agencies to restore its beauty.
Hello ronnie … nice to hear from you. Thanks for visiting Explore Iloilo
I actually have some content about Leon already, I just hope I can finish organizing this site so people will have easier access to these archived contents.
Ilonggo ka man gali, hehe. Hope your plan of revisiting your father’s home province comes true :)
I’ll be posting an article about Bucari Leon and a “journal” of my visit to the place just a month ago.
BTW, the “lumot” in Boracay is a normal occurenceit has been there loooong before the “Boracay Boom”.

Yup, my father is an Ilonggo who hails from Leon and I’m very proud of my roots. I love reading articles, news and anything about Iloilo and I’m glad we have this kind of Internet site featuring my beloved province. Living in Caloocan City and planning to settle in Iloilo but not at this point since my work is in Metro Manila.
I had a work-related visit in Iloilo last February which was a short one but I managed to take some pictures of the Capitol, Museo Iloilo, a bowl of delicious La Paz Batchoy at Ted’s and chicken barbecue at Mang Inasal.
Please make a feature story about Sicogon Island too. Thanks.
Hello Ronnie,
I’d love to make a feature about Sicogon, but I haven’t visited the place yet and don’t have pictures about it. I’ve been thinking about going to Sicogon for the longest time already :)
