Major Ongoing Infrastructure Projects in Iloilo - April 2007
' style='float:left;'/>“); }; ?>The sight of cranes in the city is getting more and more common as infrastructure projects are currently being built to solve the major problems that have hampered the growth of the city of Iloilo such as flooding, traffic, and outdated facilities.
One such mega project (at least for Iloilo City’s standard) is the Iloilo Flood Control Project, which aims to control the perrenial flashfloods in the city during rainy seasons. The project is now in its second phase. Package I of the second phase of the Iloilo Flood Control Project involves the improvement of Aganan River, Tigum River and the creation of a new river called the “Jaro Floodway”, to drain the flood waters into the sea. The project is expected to be completed in 2009-2010.

Another ongoing project in Iloilo, which I think currently has a more social awareness because of the inconvenience experienced by motorists and passengers during its construction, is the Infante flyover. The project involves the construction of a flyover, measuring 299 meters in length, over “Stoplight”, or the intersection of M.H del Pilar St./General Luna St. and Diversion Road/Infante St. The project aims to provide a smoother flow of traffic in the “Stoplight” area since motorists plying Gen. Luna will have an uninterrupted drive to Molo via M.H. del Pilar St. After the completion of the Infante Flyover another flyover infront of SM City will immediately start construction.

Over at Brgy. Nabitasan La Paz (behind Gaisano City), the fishponds in the area have now been covered with land to reclaim the area for a mixed commercial-residential development. Just last year, the Jalandoni Bridge (the new one near San Agustin) and access road going to Luna St., La Paz was finished improving the access to the area. Future improvements in the accessibility of the area includes the construction of a new road and bridge (over Dungon Creek) to connect the new Jalandoni Bridge to Diversion Road in Mandurriao. Also, a new riverside promenade called the “Iloilo Boulevard” will be built in the other side, starting from the Jalandoni Bridge to the parking lot at the back of Gaisano City. The Iloilo Boulevard is envisioned to be lined with restoraunts/bars/and coffeeshops to cater to the increasing demand of places for recreation in the city. The last phase of the project involves the construction of a flyover over General Luna St., in the Gen. Luna - Jalandoni St. intersection.

Over at the Diversion Road area in Mandurriao, a road project is currently ongoing to stimulate business activity into the area. The project involves the concreting of road in Brgy. Tabucan and Brgy. San Rafael in Mandurriao, which will improve the transportation from Molo to Diversion Road.

A very controversial project in Iloilo right now is the New Iloilo Airport Project in Santa Barbara-Cabatuan Towns. Although some consider it completed already, I still consider it as ongoing since it has not yet been inaugurated and opened. The date for its inauguration has been moved a few times because of the unavailability of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, which is expected to grace the event. The latest tentative date for its opening is May 10, 2007.

To improve the accessibility of the airport, access road from Iloilo City and Santa Barbara is already being planned. The project covers the stretch of L-98 in Desamaparados towards Christ the King in Ungka, Jaro district all the way to the Santa Barbara bypass road. The road and bridge widening project will need a total funding of P90.6 million. The current road measuring 2 lanes on both sides will be expanded to a 4 lane road to accommodate more vehicles.
Proposed infrastructure projects to watch out for:
Metro Iloilo Circumferential Road
Panay Railways
Worldclass highway to Caticlan

replyThe relocation sites of the squatters in every barangay is a must too. I wish the DPWH/Urban Planner Developer, and the leaders of Iloilo City and the Province will get together and discuss this matter. The squatters need re-arrangement or re-aligning to look better. Thank You. :)
replyI am very happy to all the projects that starting to pop-up in the City of Iloilo and the Province as well. In my own main concern at this time is the potable water and the electricity. I wish the National government will pay attention in regards to these problems, the electricty and the potable water. The problem that occurs all the time is the brown out, and the shortage of potable water in the city and barangays. I wish these problems will be solved ASAP. Thanks. :)
