Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council

Metro Iloilo is an inter-LGU cooperation composed of Iloilo City, the Province of Guimaras, and the municipalities of San Miguel, Pavia, Leganes, Oton, and Santa Barbara.

Metro Iloilo was created through EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 559 done in the City of Manila on the 28th day of August 2006.
The creation of MIGEDC, which focuses on the acceleration of the economic development of Iloilo and Guimaras provinces, is in line with the Mega-Region Economic Development Strategy of the national government.

The Metro Iloilo – Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) conducted a Strategic Mapping Workshop to determine its priority goals by undertaking specific approaches, assisted by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and the Local Governance Development Program (LGDP) of the Australian government. the MIGEDC focuses on six areas of collaboration, namely: Basic Services Delivery, Environmental Management, Public Safety and Security, Land Use Management, Infrastructure Development, and Economic Promotion and Development.

The province of Guimaras assumes the role of agri-eco-tourism center; Pavia as agro-industrial center; Leganes as the center for light industries; San Miguel as the agricultural basket; Oton as the dormitory and Santa Barbara as the international air travel gateway.

Iloilo City remains as the residential, financial commercial, governance and educational hub not only for Guimaras island and the five “satellite” municipalities but also for the entire Western Visayas region.

Iloilo City Jerry Treñas has been named MIGEDC chairperson with Guimaras Gov. JC Rahman Nava, as co-chairperson.
