Oton Church

oton church
Oton church, the blending of a Greek or Byzantine plan with Gothic and Classic elements, was one one of the architectural achievements of the colonial period. Too bad it’s grandeur can only be seen in pictures today, as it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1948.

The shape of the Oton Church is that of a Greek Cross, which means that the length of its four sides are equal. In the middle is a huge altar or its retablo mayor, a feature not commonly found in Philippine Churches.

New Church of Oton

What’s left today is a small part of its walls, which was made into a charming and seemingly enchanting grotto located beside the new church. On top of the stone wall, a huge balete tree has grown and has hidden the stone slab because of the overgrowth its roots.

Yeah, too bad. Oton is the oldest town in Iloilo and yet we don’t have any historical landmarks. Except of course for the golden death mask unearthed there which is now at the National Museum.

It would be nice if the Oton LGU restore its old cemetery for a start.

it is too hard for us always to locate through the web about the historical church of Oton, Iloilo. according to our natives, before, this church and the town was one of the historic towns in the province of iloilo. we wanted to log-on to the municipal website but we could not continue. we wanted to know the town’s historical sites and culture. better, the LGU should improve it’s site.

I remember when i was young, my family used to go to Anhawan Beach Resort in Oton on the weekend. What happened to the place now?

  6. Posted March 9, 2008 at 10:56 pm |

It’s definitely still there and the place is still a great place to go during the weekends. Though I heard isn’t as popular as it used to be.

at least i can see how it looked like. the old church has always been one of the fascinating stories i have heard from the folks in my childhood. yes, too bad the old church was destroyed. the new one is under maintenance and beautification yet it cannot boast historical architecture.

i’m from oton. i love my town! best in iloilo for me.
