Five tribes performed this year during the street dance competition of Miagao’s Salakayan Festival 2009. The event was a great way to learn about the rich history and culture of the town through a series of colorful dance dramas that centered on the resilience of the people of Miagao against unfortunate events during the town’s past such as the frequent attacks of Moro pirates and natural calamities.

The presentations are also inspired by the acceptance of the townsfolk to Christianity and how the Miagao Church played an important role in the town’s history by not only being a house of worship but also being a fortress, where the townsfolk would seek refuge during attacks by the Moro pillagers. The Miagao Church is a magnificent display of Filipino artistry, recognized by the United Nations Educational. Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world heritage site.
