San Joaquin Cemetery

Built at the twilight of Spanish rule, San Joaquin cemetery was initiated by Fray Mariano Vamba, the last Augustinian parish priest of the town. Baroque architecture with oriental influence characterizes the overall design of the Campo Santo. San Joaquin Cemetery is perhaps the grandest and best preserved in the entire province of Iloilo.

Miagao Cemetery: A heritage destination

The Miagao cemetery located at Bgy. Baybay Norte (formerly Cota Baybay) houses an exceptional capilla or funerary chapel. In olden times, masses were held here on All Saint’s Day, Sundays and other important feast days.

Inaugurated in 1884, Janiuay cemetery was hailed as the most artistic cemetery in the Philippines. In fact, it was once featured in the National Geographic Magazine.

Iloilo’s Cemeteries for heritage tourism?

In Iloilo, there is now a growing awareness of the heritage tourism value of our colonial churches and the pre-war commercial buildings in downtown Iloilo. When guests come to visit, we bring them to these sites.

Little do we know that here exists still another architectural genre that further confirms our rich Ilonggo cultural heritage. Perhaps, it is unthinkable to see cemeteries as tourist attractions. The description “Spanish-period cemeteries” sounds rather morbid to many. But yes, cemeteries and art do mix.

Cabatuan Catholic Cemetery

Built of gray stone, the Cabatuan cemetery was built by Fr. Juan Porras and was blessed on 4 February 1894. It is the only extant Spanish cemetery in the Philippines that is a perfect square.
