Iloilo City celebrates 73rd Charter Day – Schedule of Events

The City of Iloilo will be commemorating the 73rd Charter day with a 40-day celebration from July 16 to August 25, 2010. This year’s theme “Dakbanwang Iloilo Bugal Ko” aims to increase awareness about the city’s history and development and instill a “pride of place” among the public by showcasing Iloilo City’s history and culture during the festivities.

Some of you might recall that Iloilo was already a city even during the Spanish colonial Period. Back in the 19th century, the present day City Proper or Downtown district solely comprised the Municipality of Iloilo (also call “Punta” back in the day). The Districts of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao were all separate towns alongside Iloilo. Governor General Don Valeriano Wayler created the Ayuntamiento or City Council of Iloilo on January 31, 1890, the date adopted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod as “Araw ng Lungsod ng Iloilo” or the Iloilo City Foundation Day.

A week after, the Becerra Law of 1889 was approved and established Iloilo’s cityhood together with Jaro, Cebu, Batangas, Albay, Nueva Caceres, and Vigan. By virtue of the Royal Decree of 1896, Iloilo City was given the coat of arms with the inscription: “La Muy Leal Y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo” in recognition of the people’s loyalty to the Spanish crown.

Iloilo (including Jaro) was, however, reverted back to being a municipality sometime in 1901 when the American’s took over the Philippines. In July 16, 1937, Iloilo (Punta) was merged with the towns of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao to form present day Iloilo City on July 16, 1937 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 158. The parade and celebration was postponed 40 days later pending the formal inauguration of the City Government of Iloilo on August 25, 1937.

Deco’s and Mang Inasal restaurants to open in Amigo Mall – 04/10 Update

Deco’s La Paz Batchoy and Mang Inasal, two of Iloilo’s well received home-grown restaurants are expanding in Amigo Mall along Delgado St. It is a surprising development since both shops already have existing branches in the near vicinity. Barely a few minute’s walk is another branch of Deco’s and two other Mang Inasal branches.

Valeria-Delgado Food Strip

Valeria and Delgado Streets in Downtown Iloilo is a food and shopping haven in Downtown Iloilo City. A few mid-sized shopping centers are located in the area such as SM Delgado, Marymart Mall, Amigo Mall, and The Atrium. Aside from the restaurants inside the malls, there are also restaurant/coffee shop strips along Valeria St. called “La Sallette” and another in Delgado St. called “La Terraza,” where locals and visitors go to for delicious food or just to sip coffee and do people watching along the arcaded sidewalks.

Dinagyang 2010 Coverage

Be prepared this weekend to witness the whole City of Iloilo revel during the Dinagyang Festival 2010 and experience an explosion of sound, color, and dance. The Dinagyang Festival is a religious and cultural celebration in Iloilo City held on the fourth Sunday of January, the week after the Sinulog In Cebu and the Ati-Atihan in Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Nino and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis.

Dinagyang Opening Salvo 2010

Transcom opens call center in Iloilo

Transcom, considered as Europe’s largest business process outsourcing (BPO) firm, is currently operating in its new call center facility in Amigo Mall, Iznart. St. The company is set to hire around 1,000 to 2,000 employees for its Iloilo site. Iloilo Central Market

The Iloilo Central Market is located in Downtown Iloilo City, bounded by Iznart – Guanco – Aldeguer – Rizal Streets. Its art deco style main entrance / portal is one of the protectedÂ heritage buildings of the Calle Real Heritage Zone. The Iloilo Central Market is a popular destination in Iloilo City for cheap wares, crafts, and fresh agricultural produce.

Ledesma (Eagle) House

The Ledesma House (sometimes called “Eagle House”) is an imposing Gothic Renaissance inspired heritage house located at the corner of Rizal and Ortiz Street in Downtown Iloilo City. The house features sculptures of eagles perched on top of its front fence. A caged Philippine Eagle is also prominently displayed on its second floor balcony. The Ledesma House is a landmark for passengers going to Guimaras Island via the Ortiz Wharf.

Freedom Grandstand and General Macario Peralta Dinagyang Park

The Freedom Grandstand is an large outdoor stage located along Iznart St., in Downtown Iloilo. It is named Freedom Grandstand because it is a venue for all sorts of events and political demonstrations in the city. Freedom Grandstand is the main judging area during the annual Dinagyang Festival.

Behind the staduim is a park named after Ilonggo war hero General Macario Peralta. A statue stands in the park in his honor.
