Buhang Bridge and the ongoing contruction of the Jaro Floodway

As Iloilo is currently experiencing heavy rains and expecting the same weather condition for the week ahead, Explore Iloilo starts its regular postings with fresh updates of the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP), the metro’s P5.58 billion solution to perennial flooding in the Iloilo City and outlying areas (hopefully this project will be able to prevent another “Typhoon Frank scenario” from wrecking havoc to the city ever again).

Revisiting Bucari After Typhoon Frank

Bucari in Leon, Iloilo’s little Baguio, used to be frequently featured here in Explore Iloilo for being a great place to visit especially during the summer. During the height of typhoon frank last year, there have been videos of Bucari uploaded in youtube that showed the main site of Brgy. Bucari (Sitio Camandag) covered with floodwaters. Fortunately, Bucari didn’t suffer any casualties, just a landscape that has suffered so much change due to the onslaught of Typhoon Frank. Here are pictures of Bucari taken a few months ago:

A big thank you to all viewers of Explore Iloilo for continuing to support this blog and its aim of promoting Iloilo online! Your views, comments, emails, links, and referrals to friends and family were of great inspiration to keep the flame burning. Looking forward to yet another productive and dynamic year of covering our beloved Iloilo!

In 2008, Explore Iloilo has attracted over 194,769 Visits (533 visits per day) with 710,085 Pageviews (1944 pageviews per day) and a total of 2,863 comments (Google Analytics). Figures could have been higher if not for server down times especially during the end of the year, I have corrected the problem and moved to a more reliable web host.

Typhoon Frank causes flood in Kalibo and the rest of Aklan, help needed!

We’ve all known about the sunken MV Princess of the Stars and the destruction of Typhoon Frank in Iloilo. Unfortunately, other areas of Western Visayas like Aklan, Capiz, and Antique hasn’t received the same amount of media attention albeit also experiencing the worst typhoon that hit their provinces. For now, I’ll be focusing on Aklan and how Typhoon Frank has affected the province.

Iloilo City intensifies relief effort; puts up trust account and website

In response to the widespread devastation of Typhoon Frank in Iloilo City, the local government has established a website to help spread information about the calamity. Dubbed as “Bangon Iloilo” (http://www.bangoniloilo.com), the website contains updates and news, stories, pictures, and other resources about Typhoon Frank and its aftermath.

Here’s a quote from the website on what “Bangon Iloilo” is about:

“Bangon Iloilo is a comprehensive program designed to help the flood victims recover in terms of housing, access to basic services such as water, health and education, and livelihood and income. The program also desires to optimize rehabilitation efforts to help victims improve their livelihood and realize incomes closer to if not above the poverty threshold level on a sustained basis.

Its goal is the economic and environmental rehabilitation of the at least 241 affected barangays in Iloilo City and Metro Iloilo local governments of Leganes, Oton, Pavia, San Miguel and Santa Barbara through livelihood activities that support the restoration of the environment.

Bangon Iloilo is a social investment promotion campaign to support the rehabilitation efforts of the Metro Iloilo local governments to be managed by the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) and the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) under its Urban Partnership Program funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).”

Iloilo Flood Pictures and Videos

The worst flood in decades has just hit Iloilo. More than 80% of the Iloilo City was affected and a large portion of Iloilo Province was devastated, damaging homes, agriculture, livestock and infrastructure. The widespread flash floods was caused by the large volume of rainfall from Typhoon Frank and to an extent environmental changes in the uplands and lowlands: global warming, deforestation, urban development.

The flooding in the city was strong enough to drift away vehicles ranging from motorcycles to 4x4s. The photo shows a tricycle perched atop a car in Jaro District. Photo by Ashley Dagdag

Iloilo Flood – Typhoon Frank Ravages Iloilo

The City and Province of Iloilo is currently under a State of Calamity after a destructive storm, named Typhoon Frank (international name: Fengshen), had just battered the country with Iloilo being one of the worst hit by the disaster. Aside from Iloilo City, most of Iloilo Province’s 42 towns were also heavily affected especially the towns traversed by major rivers.
