Iloilo Riverside Esplanade Planned Along Treñas Boulevard

A beautiful riverside beautification project will soon be developed along the Iloilo River this 2011 as proposed by Senator Franklin M. Drilon. According to the Ilonggo Senator, the project will provide a recreational space for walking complete with stalls, restaurants, and viewing decks extending from the Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao all the way to Drilon Bridge in La Paz. Construction will start anytime soon and is expected to be completed by year-end. A budget fund amounting to P150 million has already been released to kick start the project.

Iloilo 2011 New Year Fireworks Display Video and Photos

The spectacular concert and pyrotechnic show, which was reported to cost up to P1 million, was organized by the Iloilo City Government together with GMA TV. Here they are:

Iloilo City celebrates 73rd Charter Day – Schedule of Events

The City of Iloilo will be commemorating the 73rd Charter day with a 40-day celebration from July 16 to August 25, 2010. This year’s theme “Dakbanwang Iloilo Bugal Ko” aims to increase awareness about the city’s history and development and instill a “pride of place” among the public by showcasing Iloilo City’s history and culture during the festivities.

Some of you might recall that Iloilo was already a city even during the Spanish colonial Period. Back in the 19th century, the present day City Proper or Downtown district solely comprised the Municipality of Iloilo (also call “Punta” back in the day). The Districts of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao were all separate towns alongside Iloilo. Governor General Don Valeriano Wayler created the Ayuntamiento or City Council of Iloilo on January 31, 1890, the date adopted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod as “Araw ng Lungsod ng Iloilo” or the Iloilo City Foundation Day.

A week after, the Becerra Law of 1889 was approved and established Iloilo’s cityhood together with Jaro, Cebu, Batangas, Albay, Nueva Caceres, and Vigan. By virtue of the Royal Decree of 1896, Iloilo City was given the coat of arms with the inscription: “La Muy Leal Y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo” in recognition of the people’s loyalty to the Spanish crown.

Iloilo (including Jaro) was, however, reverted back to being a municipality sometime in 1901 when the American’s took over the Philippines. In July 16, 1937, Iloilo (Punta) was merged with the towns of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao to form present day Iloilo City on July 16, 1937 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 158. The parade and celebration was postponed 40 days later pending the formal inauguration of the City Government of Iloilo on August 25, 1937.

Iloilo Riverside Boulevard

The Iloilo Boulevard located along the Iloilo River is Iloilo City’s newest recreation destination. It is a great place to have a leisurely stroll, go biking, hang out with friends and family, or simply enjoy the great view of the Iloilo River during sunset.

The riverside promenade starts from Barbeque Park along Diversion Road (near Marina) and then passes through the Riverside Boardwalk and the salt beds in Brgy. Tabucan, Mandurriao. The stretch ends in Carpenter’s Bridge, which was recently closed to vehicular traffic and beautified with a cobble-stone laden road. The exhilarating experience is best capped with a meal at the humble Andes Patahan or Casual Dining at Messe Ristaurante near the bridge.

Jaro and La Paz Districts are not spared by the pattern of new developments sprouting all over the city. This is just the beginning for Jaro and La Paz because after the completion of the Iloilo Flood Control Project next year, vast land areas will be opened up to accommodate bigger investments in these flood prone districts of Iloilo City.

As Iloilo is currently experiencing heavy rains and expecting the same weather condition for the week ahead, Explore Iloilo starts its regular postings with fresh updates of the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP), the metro’s P5.58 billion solution to perennial flooding in the Iloilo City and outlying areas (hopefully this project will be able to prevent another “Typhoon Frank scenario” from wrecking havoc to the city ever again).

Iloilo flood control project targetted for completion by 2010

The over-all accomplishments of the two on-going contract packages of the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFC) are now placed at around 80 percent, as of April 2009.

This was disclosed by Engr. Jose Al Fruto, Assistant Project Manager of the IFC during a recent press conference called by the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Regional Development 6 (OPARD 6) in coordination with the Philippine Information Agency 6.

Google Earth Series: Iloilo City Part 3

On this installment of the Google Earth Series we’ll be viewing images of Iloilo’s urban structure. Get a closer look of more places in Iloilo from the sky. Google Earth has also added another hi-res satellite image, which made it possible to get a better view of southern parts of Iloilo City including Oton and western parts of Guimaras.

Iloilo City Proper

Apparently, the densest part of Iloilo City is the City Proper. Fortunately, there are less clouds covering Iznart-J.M. Basa Sts because of the recent update, giving a better view of Calle Real.
