Seven festivals from different towns in Iloilo performed yesterday (April 8, 2008) afternoon during the Pasundayag of Festivals to open the celebration of Semana sang Iloilo. The contingents first performed at the freedom grandstand where they were able to showcase their culture and history through a colorful and well choreographed dance drama presentation. After performing, a parade followed until the provincial capitol grounds, where the contingents made their final act.

Even before the coming of the Spaniards, Iloilo played an important role as a major trading post in the Visayas. Chinese merchants would sail to Iloilo to trade and in effect, building flourishing relationship with the natives. Today, Iloilo holds the distinction of having the third largest concentration of “Tsinoys” or Filipinos with Chinese ancestry or descent in the country. This year of the Rat, the Ilonggos strengthened that Filipino-Chinese relationship with a grand celebration and festivity last February 8, 2007.

For the second time, popular ABS CBN morning talk show Boy&Kris featured Iloilo and Guimaras on their episode, which was aired on February 3, 2007. Since the first episode was able to showcase the many places of interest in Iloilo, the second episode featured more on the popular and note-worthy Ilonggo personalities. The show also displayed many of Guimaras’ tourist attractions including their top attraction, the Guimaras mango, touted as the sweetest mango in the world.

Latest updates about 100MW Coal-fired Powerplant in Concepcion
Project Details: The project involves the construction of a 100MW coal-fired power plant by DCMI Holdings in Concepcion town located in the Northeastern part of Iloilo. The said power plant will be constructed in Sitio Puntales, Barangay Nipa, Concepcion and will occupy about 600 hectares.

Despite opposition to the project due to environmental concerns, the project has passed requirements of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the issuance of an Environmental Compliance Certificate and a memorandum of Memorandum of Understanding between DCMI Holdings and the LGU of Concepcion was already secured.
The 100MW Coal-fired Powerplant in Concepcion will have its groundbreaking before July 2008 and will start construction on July 2008.
