Jaro Floodway August 2011 Updates

After years of construction, the 4.75km Jaro Floodway has finally served its purpose of minimizing the flooding problem of Iloilo City. As seen from the photos during our “inspection” of the actual site, we can see how effective the Jaro Floodway has been to divert flood waters from the Jaro River during the rainy season in Iloilo City. The flooding problem in Jaro and La Paz districts of Iloilo City and Pavia town used to be a major perennial problem among residents and business owners but now, residents have noticed a significant decrease of flooding incidents in the area. The uplifting development is seen to open vast, once flood prone areas in Jaro District and Pavia to additional developments especially with the construction of the Metro Iloilo Circumferential Road, a section of which will pass beside the Jaro Floodway.

Iloilo Airport Guide

The Iloilo Airport serves Iloilo and the general area of Panay Island. It is located 19 kilometers away from Iloilo City, specifically in the tri-boundaries of Cabatuan, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel town. Four airlines namely Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines, Zest Air serve the New Iloilo Airport with regular trips to the cities of Manila,Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro. The Iloilo Airport is regarded as one of the most modern airports in the Philippines and 4th busiest in terms of passenger and cargo movement.

3 Major Celebrations in Iloilo this February 2011; Fiesta Fever Continues

The party doesn’t stop in Iloilo after the Dinagyang Festival in January. Three more major celebrations are in store for Iloilo City this February namely: the Jaro Fiesta on February 2, Iloilo Chinese New Year Grand Parade on Feb. 4, and finally, the Weeklong Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival culminating on Feb. 20. These events are certainly worth watching out for whenever you’re in Iloilo.

Jaro Fiesta 2011

The District of Jaro celebrates a fiesta for Nuestra Senyora de la Candelaria (The Lady of Candles) every February 2, 2009. The Jaro fiesta is considered as one of the grandest fiesta celebration in the Philippines. People from all over Iloilo, converge in Jaro to show their devotion to the Candelaria and partake in the sumptuous feast prepared by Jaro’s Catholic households. The main highlight of the Jaro Fiesta is a religious procession lead by the young women of the elite Jaro families, which is held during the afternoon.

Iloilo Chinese New Year 2011

A very festive Chinese New Year celebration is held in Iloilo, which holds the distinction of having one of the largest concentration of “Tsinoys” or Filipinos with Chinese ancestry or descent in the country. The main highlight of the Iloilo Chinese New Year celebration is a grand parade on February 4, 2011. The Chinese parade will start from the Capitol grounds and end in the Plazoletagay Rotunda along Iznart St., where a cultural program will start at 4pm followed by a grand fireworks display show.

Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival 2011

The Paraw regatta is a race among seafarers on colorful sailboats called Paraws in the straits between Guimaras Island and the City of Iloilo. The first race started in 1973 with the mission to preserve the historic value of the paraws. Today, the event has grown from being a boat race to a festival with various interesting and exciting activities like the Pinta Paraw and the Samba de Regatta Dance Competition. SM Malls Bares Plan to Build a New ‘Supermall’ in Iloilo City

A according to a news article released by BusinessWorld, SM Prime holdings is eyeing to build a second SM Supermall in Iloilo City. Details about its proposed location, floor area, construction dates, were not revealed in the article. We’ll just have to wait and see until more details are announced by SM Prime Holdings.

Jaro Cathedral Repair and Renovations – August 2010 Updates

Here are some photos of the major renovations being done at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. Back in 2007, the Archdiocese of Jaro launched a find raising campaign tagged as Project 20/11 BC or 20 million in eleven months para sa Balay ni Nuestra Snra. de la Candelaria.

The major works involved general repairs and improvement of the actual structure of the Jaro Cathedral especially the roof, dome, and ceilings. The damaging effects of time and the elements had already taken a toll to the antiquated Jaro Cathedral and it became a concern to replace and improve the Cathderal’s structural integrity. Aesthetic changes are also being done. Its more of a renovation than a restoration. In consolation, the Jaro Cathedral General Repair Project Team reports that careful study and consultation was done to adhere to a tasteful makeover with regards to cohering with the architecture and period of the building’s construction.

Iloilo City celebrates 73rd Charter Day – Schedule of Events

The City of Iloilo will be commemorating the 73rd Charter day with a 40-day celebration from July 16 to August 25, 2010. This year’s theme “Dakbanwang Iloilo Bugal Ko” aims to increase awareness about the city’s history and development and instill a “pride of place” among the public by showcasing Iloilo City’s history and culture during the festivities.

Some of you might recall that Iloilo was already a city even during the Spanish colonial Period. Back in the 19th century, the present day City Proper or Downtown district solely comprised the Municipality of Iloilo (also call “Punta” back in the day). The Districts of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao were all separate towns alongside Iloilo. Governor General Don Valeriano Wayler created the Ayuntamiento or City Council of Iloilo on January 31, 1890, the date adopted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod as “Araw ng Lungsod ng Iloilo” or the Iloilo City Foundation Day.

A week after, the Becerra Law of 1889 was approved and established Iloilo’s cityhood together with Jaro, Cebu, Batangas, Albay, Nueva Caceres, and Vigan. By virtue of the Royal Decree of 1896, Iloilo City was given the coat of arms with the inscription: “La Muy Leal Y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo” in recognition of the people’s loyalty to the Spanish crown.

Iloilo (including Jaro) was, however, reverted back to being a municipality sometime in 1901 when the American’s took over the Philippines. In July 16, 1937, Iloilo (Punta) was merged with the towns of Jaro, La Paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao to form present day Iloilo City on July 16, 1937 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 158. The parade and celebration was postponed 40 days later pending the formal inauguration of the City Government of Iloilo on August 25, 1937.

New Green Mango and Coffee Break Store in Nelly Garden

It’s actually been a while since Coffee Break and Green Mango opened in a new building in Nelly Garden along Lopez Jaena St., Jaro but here are photos of it for everybody to see. Jaro Floodway (Iloilo Flood Control Project) – 04/10 update

Here’s an update of the Jaro Floodway, which is a component of the Iloilo Flood Control Project. The Jaro Floodway is basically a new artificial river or waterway built to address the flooding problem in Iloilo City by providing an escape channel of floodwaters from where the Aganan and Tigum Rivers meet in Pavia direct to the Iloilo Strait.Â The excavation works along the whole floodway is almost complete and all the 6 bridges are already being used (with the temporary land crossings removed).

The contractors are currently on the process of improving the river walls with concrete on important areas like near the bridges and vetiver grass on most parts.

This is the part where the Jaro Floodway meets the Iloilo Strait:

There is are two parallel roads at each side of the Jaro Flooway. The new route provides direct access from Pavia to McArthur Highway in Jaro, and all the way to the Coastal Road in La Paz. It’s still not certain if both of these roads will be paved once the floodway is complete.

A lot of the vetiver grass looks like it’s about to wither (if it hasn’t already) because of the harsh dry season.
