Investment Opportunities in Iloilo and Guimaras Report

During the Iloilo – Guimaras Investment Forum held on September 4, 2009, at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila, a lot of discussions were bared geared towards marketing the potential of Metro Iloilo – Guimaras as an attractive investment center specifically in areas of information and communication technology, tourism, and agribusiness.

One of the most exciting parts of the forum was a list of proposed major investments in Iloilo outlined in the “Tourism Investment Opportunities in Iloilo and Guimaras” report presented by Ms. Narzalina Lim, President ofÂ Asia Pacific Projects, Inc. Here are some of the investments mentioned in the report:

Kapideco Estate

Kapideco (Kauturan Pison Development Corp.) estate is a master planned mixed-use development currently being developed in the large area that was once salt beds and fish ponds in Brgy. Tabucan and San Rafael in Mandurriao. It is very accessible to Diversion Road and is located in between big commercial developments – Smallville Complex and SM City Iloilo. The whole area from Kapideco to the Old Airport Strip (Megaworld Site) is envisioned to be Iloilo City’s next Central Business District. KAPIDECO is also the home of Ateneo de Iloilo’s new campus, which is already near completion.

Iloilo City intensifies relief effort; puts up trust account and website

In response to the widespread devastation of Typhoon Frank in Iloilo City, the local government has established a website to help spread information about the calamity. Dubbed as “Bangon Iloilo” (http://www.bangoniloilo.com), the website contains updates and news, stories, pictures, and other resources about Typhoon Frank and its aftermath.

Here’s a quote from the website on what “Bangon Iloilo” is about:

“Bangon Iloilo is a comprehensive program designed to help the flood victims recover in terms of housing, access to basic services such as water, health and education, and livelihood and income. The program also desires to optimize rehabilitation efforts to help victims improve their livelihood and realize incomes closer to if not above the poverty threshold level on a sustained basis.

Its goal is the economic and environmental rehabilitation of the at least 241 affected barangays in Iloilo City and Metro Iloilo local governments of Leganes, Oton, Pavia, San Miguel and Santa Barbara through livelihood activities that support the restoration of the environment.

Bangon Iloilo is a social investment promotion campaign to support the rehabilitation efforts of the Metro Iloilo local governments to be managed by the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) and the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) under its Urban Partnership Program funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).”

Metro Iloilo Road Network

The project seeks to enhance international and domestic investment by providing easy access to the Pavia Industrial Area, Iloilo International Port and the New Iloilo Airport in Santa Barbara.

It involves the construction of six circumferential roads within the Metro Iloilo region, consisting a total of PhP 6 Billion. These roads will reduce travel time within the region, as they will connect major highways to the northern, western, and southern parts of Iloilo province, paving the way for increased economic and tourism opportunities in Panay Island.

Project Details: The Central Business District (CBD) of Iloilo City is composed of the old commercial areas in the City Proper. Before the coming of malls, the streets of Iloilo’s CBD were lined with traces of bustling trade and commerce. Droves of people would come to shop and transact business in all sorts of shops. Today, new air-conditioned malls have taken the limelight and attracted a considerable portion of the market share. Though, the old CBD remains as an important shopping destination because of its low-cost buys.

MIGEDC leaders to show “Power of One” in summit

Iloilo City (6 December) — Leaders from Metro Iloilo and Guimaras will meet in a summit on December 14, to put together their vision, actions and opportunities for growth as one big community to make the city and the region as a premier place of the future.

Francis Gentoral, Manager of the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI), said the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Leaders Summit is a challenge to show how harmonization of plans and projects can be applied in the Metro-Iloilo Guimaras Development Council (MIGEDC).

Gentoral said the summit is an opportunity to show the MIGEDC member-municipalities how far they have gone with the development framework and invite them to look at their initiatives.

The keynote theme of the one-day summit is anchored on the presentation and discussion of the Iloilo City Development Agenda and the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras (MIG) Roadmap 2010 as blueprints of the development directions of the city and the MIG region.

The presentation, which will be done by the MIGEDC chair, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas, will cover the development highlights of Iloilo City and the MIG region, the best practices recognized by international and national bodies.

Gentoral said prominent Ilonggo leaders representing various sectors, will identify the strengths and opportunities and will adopt a declaration establishing a consensus roadmap for the future.

Among the highlights in the summit will be break out sessions on Experiencing Tourism where participants will discuss sustainable tourism development, agri-tourism, heritage conservation, festival management and the like.

Other sessions will include Advancing Infrastructure development, Educating the City Region that will deal with concern in quality in the schools, and Showcasing Good Local Governance, which is a dialogue among LGUs and international counterparts, for the LGUs to gather insights on how to deal with concerns, like solid waste management, information technology use, infrastructure development.

The CUI, as lead convenor of this summit, does not only advocate for “Power of One” as the theme but even seeks to make the local leaders and their partners understand that there have been so much talk and discussions already.

“It’s time to lessen the talk; rather it’s time to buckle down and work,” Francis Gentoral said. (PIA 6)

Arroyo Fountain Restoration

The Arroyo Fountain, a symbol of Iloilo’s opulence and rich heritage, is currently being restored by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD).

Located in front of the old Iloilo Provincial Capitol, the Arroyo Fountain has not been able to function for quite some time. This is to the dismay of Ilonggos as it is one of Iloilo City’s more prominent landmarks.
