New Iloilo City Hall – December 2010 Update

As 2010 draws to a close, a new chapter of Iloilo’s progress and development beckons. Much needed infrastructure projects were completed, which has prompted a construction boom of sorts all over the city and province. Many of them, like the New Iloilo City Hall is rapidly shaping up and is already due for completion next year.

Pototan’s IWAG Festival of Lights

Lizares Mansion (Angelicum School)

A wondrous sight to behold is the Lizares Mansion, now the Angelicum School, known as one of Iloilo’s most iconic heritage houses. The Lizares Mansion stands in testimony of Iloilo’s booming sugar industry during its heydey. Every year, the main building of Angelicum becomes the subject of amusement as thousands of Christmas lights adorn every inch of its facade further enhancing the charm of this magnificent edifice.

Muelle Loney (Iloilo’s River Wharf) – Hub of the Booming Sugar Trade in the Visayas during the 19th century

Muelle Loney (pronounced as Mool-ye) refers to Iloilo’s River Wharf and the street at the western side of the river. It is being used today as a port for inter-island vessels such as ferries and “Roll-on Roll-off” (RORO) boats plying the Iloilo to Bacolod route. Thousands of passengers, pedestrians, and motorists pass by Muelle Loney everyday. Unknown to most of them is the history of Muelle Loney and its central-role in the birth of the prosperous sugar industry of the Visayas during the 1800s to 1900s.

Old Pictures of Iloilo during the Spanish Period Part I

In 1566, the Spaniards under Miguel Lopez de Legaspi came to Panay and established a settlement in Ogtong (now Oton, Iloilo). The Spaniards, who were in search of adequate food supply found abundant rice supplies in Iloilo. In 1581 the seat of Spanish Power was moved to La Villa de Arevalo, a sitio named in honor of Avila, in Spain.

Port of Iloilo

The Port of Iloilo, considered the leading trade and commercial hub for Western Visayas is also one of the safest natural seaports of the world. It has been serving international shipping as early as 1855 handling sugar and fertilizer shipments for international market. Major trading activities were handled before in this areas as evidenced by the country’s first recorded export of sugar. The adapted perspective further shows that more than 75% of the country’s land area lies within 500 km radius of Iloilo encompassing Manila City and the nation’s main industrial centers. Thus, the port could well serve as consolidation center for both importable and exporbale commodities. Within this area is a potential market of more than 32 million people.
