Visayan Daily Headlines also copies photos off blogs without permission

Another newspaper, the Bacolod-based Visayan Daily Headlines, doing a spread during the Dinagyang Festival has made Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) violations by publishing photos of bloggers without permission or even proper credits.

The Visayan Daily Headlines has published four of my photos of the Dinagyang 2008 in their newspaper and they did not have the courtesy to ask for my permission or at least credit me as the owner of the photos. Anton Shekker, a Manila-based travel blogger was also robbed of his photo by Visayan Daily Headlines. You can view his post about the matter, here.

I have contacted the Visayan Daily Headlines through email and mobile 2 days ago but they have ignored my messages. I am forced to write about their wrong doing, maybe they will have a better response once everybody know about what they’re doing. Time and time again newspaper publishers have been treating bloggers unjustly. It makes me wonder if they’re even aware about the existence of Intellectual Property Rights. People in the media should be the first to know about IPR because they deal with copyrighted content everyday.

I put my email address in my photos so anyone who wishes to use them can just send me an email. It is blatant that they chose not to disrespect the notice – “All Rights Reserved.” by not contact me.

Here are the incidence of my photos being published in the Visayan Daily Headlines.

They labeled this photo as Tribu Panaad but it’s actually a picture of Tribu Pag-asa’s performance during the Dinagyang 2008.

That’s right, Eric and also Anton are very upset with the local dailies here. These travel bloggers go to Iloilo and spend their own money just to promote the Dinagyang Festival. It is disheartening because these dailies are just discouraging them to come back. They are putting a bad name to Iloilo, us Ilonggos, and the Dinagyang Festival.

    That is so sad!
Newspapers can’t afford to hire there own photographer that they rather steal from bloggers.

Cecil, they’re just plain lazy and disrespectful. No regard for others’ right of ownership nor have the decency asking permission from the rightful owner, to say the least. And to think other people will do the same to them, they will create a big fuzz!

Hey Marcos, I could see your watermarks in the supposedly unauthorized copies of photos in the paper! Hopefully, people will notice it and direct them to your site. At least something positive will come out of it.

That’s great but they should credit the photos properly.
