Even in the past, Iloilo was already a forerunner in business and trade. Before the turn of the 20th century, Hoskyns and Co., the first department store in the country, opened in Calle Real, the prime shopping district of the city back then. Today, the huge consumer spending in Iloilo has given rise to several malls in the city.
